The Guru's
role

If you are one of those who travel around the world looking for a Guru, all you are looking for is a spiritual instructor. When there is openness, real maturity and internal surrender, God will come to you; the Guru will find you.

गुरु

The word “guru” is widely used in India and somewhat in the Western world to designate any type of teacher, instructor, or expert. However, in Sanskrit, guru literally means “the one who dispels darkness”. In this sense, it would be synonym for Satguru, that is, the Jnani (“Sage”, “Enlightened”, “Awake”, “Jivamukti”) who is dedicated to dispelling the illusion of ignorance for other human beings.

All this debate about the need or no need for the Guru, the need to work or not to work towards this Realization is quite controversial. However, the matter of the need for the Guru should never be questioned, since it is completely mistaken. Yet the matter of work could be debated. It is possible to question…

God is always present, but His presence does not necessarily means He “awakened;” It does not mean He is “awaken.” Therefore, you are Christ, you are Buddha, but a “sleeping” Christ, a “sleeping” Buddha. So God assumes a form – human or otherwise – and in His Grace implies the…

The ego can never see anything else but itself, and what it sees is always an object. Only the Guru sees the Guru, and by means of this, He finds You. The Guru’s Presence is instantaneous, but if you are not mature yet, it may take time for you to see Him. There is only one Guru! When you look at Him…

You don’t go to the Guru to question him or her. You go to the Guru to give up being “someone” in front of his or her gracious Presence, blessing Presence, enlightened Presence. Serving the Guru is not serving another person. It is surrendering to the Truth! When there is this surrender to the Truth…

When I say here is a meeting that to see the illusion you need a bit more of illusion, I am saying that these words or this meeting with the teacher, which we call Guru or Master, is something that also occurs within this illusion. This is like an encounter in a dream, in which a person communicates many things to you…

In general, a person cannot see these signs of life, cannot see these expressions on the “face” of life. So, this person needs a living Master, a Guru, to see on the expression of a human face what is Real and what is not real, what is worth sustaining and what is not worth. Therefore, the Guru will always be important…

The figure of the priest, of the pastor, the rabbi, the religious leader is always a figure of authority, of “someone” separate, like a tutor, a teacher. But a Guru is not a teacher, not a tutor, not a separate entity. I speak of the Guru, the unique Guru. The Guru is this Presence, this Consciousness which can assume a human form…

You are God! God seeing Himself. God looking at Himself. God in love with Himself. God meeting Himself. Only here exists the one who loves and the one who is loved, God and the devotee, the Guru and the disciple. It is in this sense that the Guru is essential since the Guru is the one who shows you this. You look at a rosebush and notice…

All that a book, a lecture or a teacher can provide you are new instructions. Only Truth expresses, shares the Truth. Truth is the very own Self, Consciousness itself… So, that is why the true Guru is important. This is the true Guru, when you are fortunate to face this Presence externally. This external Presence is the Sage, the Truth! A Sage, the One living in…

These meetings do not have to go up to you; you have to go to these meetings. It is not the Guru who has to go up to you; it is you that have to come to the Guru. It is not the Guru who has to go to Minas Gerais; you yourself have to come to where the Guru is. The Guru can be on Himalayan Mountain top, there on the snowy peak, but…

In some meetings, I have spoken about the importance of trusting the Guru. Either you trust the Guru, or you trust what thoughts say, what people say, what the world says. Either you trust this “internal thing” that makes you prone to the Divine Presence in the Guru’s form, or you keep believing what thought says inside…

So, when the Presence of the Guru comes into your life, it is to provide you for the Vision of the Truth about who You are and about what the world in fact is. God is the Truth of your Being; however, you do not have access to Him until you find out how to access Him inside yourself. Thus, this mysterious Power takes the form of the…

The arrival of the Guru in your life should be (I wish it were immediately) the end of any choice, decision and independence to do or not, to resolve or not, to decide or not. However, it is not like this. When the presence of God, who is the Grace, the Guru, arrives, He finds “home” occupied and cannot dwell there. God can barely visit it, quick visits as a guest…

The Guru, or the Master, is the one who attracts us exactly to show us the irrelevance of the mind, the illusion of this character you believe you are. It is quite interesting… Everyone is drawing your attention to exteriority. When the Master comes up, the Master captures your attention so that you turn inwards – here is the importance of the Guru. The Guru is…

If I repeat as a parrot that the search is needless, the guru is needless, just because I learned it, because I memorized it, so now that is only part of a new conditioning. Everything remains the same way. “I do not need a guru; I do not need a teaching; I do not need a search … ” What now? What happens? Nothing. Absolutely nothing…
